Ethiopia removes tag of terrorism from Tigray regional party

In a significant development in Ethiopia, the federal government has removed the ‘terrorist’ tag from the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the ruling party in the Tigray region. The move comes after months of conflict between the federal government and the TPLF, which erupted in November 2020 when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed launched a military offensive against the TPLF-led regional government.

The conflict, marked by allegations of human rights abuses and a humanitarian crisis, has resulted in deaths and displaced people. The federal government accused the TPLF of inciting violence and plotting to destabilize the country.

Removing the ‘terrorist’ label from the TPLF is a good way in resolving the conflict while opening up avenues for dialogue. Ethiopia’s Attorney General, Gedion Timothewos, announced the decision. He said the government was committed to ending the conflict peacefully.

The TPLF welcomed the move and called it a “positive step towards de-escalating tensions and creating an environment for meaningful dialogue.” The party has been pushing to remove the ‘terrorist’ label, which it said was unjustified and had led to the imposition of sanctions and a blockade on Tigray.

However, the conflict is far from over, and many challenges remain. The federal government and the TPLF are yet to reach a ceasefire agreement, and there are concerns over the humanitarian situation in Tigray. The United Nations has warned of a potential famine in the region, and both sides have reported atrocities committed.

Removing the ‘terrorist’ tag from the TPLF is a positive step, but it is just one of many steps to resolve the conflict and restore peace in Ethiopia.
