Near-fatal injury in World Cup Qualifier

Eb

During a World Cup qualifier, Joetex Asamoah Frimpong, a former Ghana international, shared a terrifying account of an injury that significantly threatened his life. Frimpong, who represented the Black Stars from 2005 to 2009, earning 11 caps and scoring two goals for his country, was forced to leave the match prematurely after a brutal collision with the opposing goalkeeper.

The harrowing incident occurred in Kumasi during a game against Uganda, in which Ghana emerged victorious with a 2-0 scoreline. Following Michael Essien’s goal, Frimpong found possession of the ball and embarked on a one-on-one situation with the opposing goalkeeper. However, the goalkeeper leaped during the encounter and inflicted a damaging blow to Frimpong’s rib. Reflecting on the incident, Frimpong revealed he sustained a severe rib injury that could be fatal had he not received urgent medical attention.

Frimpong was swiftly taken off the pitch and transported to the hospital, where his life was saved. However, he disclosed his rib remained swollen, showing persistent discomfort and complications resulting from the injury. Despite the gravity of his injury, he displayed remarkable resilience by continuing to play in subsequent matches against South Africa and Cape Verde.

Frimpong’s recollection serves as a poignant reminder of athletes’ inherent risks and sacrifices in pursuing their passion, even at the highest level of international competitions like the World Cup qualifiers.
