Professor Ransford Gyampo, a Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has expressed concerns over President Akufo-Addo’s involvement in assigning specific designations within the Police Service.
Gyampo believes that the governing New Patriotic Party, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is interfering with the police administration.
“The credentials of Mr. Yohunu were not known until the plot to remove Dampare was foiled by the people? Why this time? Is it the duty of the President to assign specific designations in the Police?” Gyampo posted on Facebook.
His comments follow President Akufo-Addo’s appointment of Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations, based on the advice of the Police Council.
While the Presidency described COP Yohunu’s appointment as a well-deserved recognition of his exceptional credentials and dedication to duty, Gyampo has questioned the president’s role in appointing and assigning security officials.
The university lecturer and social commentator views such appointments as an overreach of executive power.
“Must every State institution be manipulable? Oh!!” Gyampo questioned in his Facebook post.
