Curaçao earned the first FIFA World Cup point in the nation’s history after holding Ecuador to a remarkable 0-0 draw, thanks to an extraordinary goalkeeping display from veteran shot-stopper Eloy Room.
The 37-year-old Miami FC goalkeeper produced a record-equalling 15 saves in the Group E encounter, matching the World Cup benchmark set by former United States goalkeeper Tim Howard in 2014. Unlike Howard’s performance, however, Room’s heroics secured a clean sheet and a historic result for Dick Advocaat’s side.
Room Delivers a Goalkeeping Masterclass
From the opening minutes, Ecuador piled relentless pressure on the Curaçao defense, but Room stood firm with a series of spectacular stops.
His first and perhaps finest save came just three minutes into the contest when he denied Ecuador captain Enner Valencia from point-blank range. The experienced goalkeeper continued to frustrate the South Americans throughout the first half, also keeping out efforts from John Yeboah and Valencia again as Curaçao survived wave after wave of attacks.
The second half brought more of the same, with Room producing outstanding saves to deny Moisés Caicedo, Pedro Vite, Kevin Rodríguez, Nilson Angulo, Gonzalo Plata, and several other Ecuadorian attackers.
By the final whistle, he had amassed 15 saves, equalling Tim Howard’s long-standing World Cup record for the most stops in a single match.
Ecuador Left to Regret Missed Chances
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous scoring opportunities, Ecuador failed to find a breakthrough.
The South American side registered 27 shots over the course of the match but repeatedly found themselves thwarted by Room’s exceptional reflexes and positioning. Their inability to convert chances proved costly as they settled for a frustrating draw that complicates their hopes of advancing to the knockout rounds.
Curaçao Nearly Stole All Three Points
While Ecuador controlled much of the action, Curaçao also had opportunities to snatch a famous victory.
Just after the hour mark, Leandro Bacuna forced a save with a powerful effort before Liviana Comenencia also tested Ecuador’s goalkeeper with a promising strike. Although neither chance found the net, the Caribbean nation demonstrated resilience and confidence on the counterattack.
Group E Qualification Race Intensifies
The result gives Curaçao their first-ever point at a FIFA World Cup and keeps their hopes of reaching the Round of 32 alive despite suffering a heavy 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening match.
Ecuador, meanwhile, now face a must-win scenario after previously losing to Ivory Coast. They will need a positive result against already-qualified Germany in their final group-stage fixture to keep their tournament alive.
Ecuador will take on Group E leaders Germany in New Jersey on Thursday, June 25, with kickoff scheduled for 9:00 p.m. BST. At the same time, Curaçao will face Ivory Coast in Philadelphia in a decisive match that could determine the final qualification places from the group.
With momentum on their side and confidence boosted by Room’s unforgettable performance, Curaçao will believe they still have a chance to write another chapter in their World Cup history.
