During the launch of the Third Quarter Labour Statistics Report today in Accra, it was revealed that females constitute two-thirds of the unemployed population in the country, as indicated by the 2022 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey. Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the Government Statistician, pointed out that gender was not the only factor contributing to the high rates of female unemployment, noting that the unemployment rate for females was nearly twice that of males.
In the first three quarters of the previous year, 157,000 individuals, accounting for about 13.2% of the labor force, experienced at least one day of unemployment.
Other findings from the report revealed that out of about 11 million employees in a quarter, about 7.5 million individuals held their jobs continuously for three quarters. This shows that about 3.5 million people experienced employment fluctuations, making them vulnerable. The report also found that transitioning from informal employment to unemployment was five times more likely than transitioning from formal employment to unemployment.
Additionally, in the first quarter, two out of every three were unemployed but had been employed in Q1.
Finally, the number of individuals burdened by the triple threat of unemployment, food insecurity, and multidimensional poverty increased by almost 55,000 between Q2 and Q3.
