Rev. Anthony Cudjoe, a Pastor from the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has issued a challenge to Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, urging her to prioritize integrity over personal interests in her role. He emphasized that the esteemed position of Chief Justice comes with a responsibility towards both God and the nation. Rev. Cudjoe, who also serves as the Head Pastor of the Calvary Temple (ICGC) at Sakumono, conveyed this message during a Thanksgiving and dedication service held in honor of Justice Torkornoo.
Addressing the Chief Justice, Rev. Cudjoe expressed his belief that her tenure should restore hope in the court system if there were any doubts. The event was graced by notable attendees, including Supreme Court Justices such as Justice Baffoe Bonnie, Justice Professor Henrietta Mensah Bonsu, Justice Yonny Kulendi, the Judicial Secretary, Justice Pamela Addo, retired Supreme Court judge Justice Jones Dotse, justices from the Appeals Court, high court judges, magistrates, and senior members of the Judicial Service. In addition, selected government officials, including Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, Deputy Minister of Education, and Naa Torshie Addo-Lartey, the Administrator of the District Assemblies Common Fund, were present.
The occasion witnessed patrons dancing and rejoicing alongside Justice Torkornoo, who assumed the role of the 15th Chief Justice after being sworn into office by President Nana Akufo-Addo on June 12 of this year. The leadership of the Aglow Women Ministry, as well as associates and family members of the Chief Justice, were also in attendance.
Rev. Cudjoe highlighted that the eyes of Ghana and the church were focused on the Chief Justice, with the Christian community particularly proud of her achievements and the significant role she played within the church. He urged her to serve Ghana with wisdom and understanding, considering her faith. The minister emphasized the importance of seeking clarity in all matters before making judgments and decisions, so that they would be sound and clear. Rev. Cudjoe further advised the Chief Justice to seek guidance from God in selecting honest individuals to work alongside her on this journey.
Chief Justice Torkornoo, who was overwhelmed with joy, expressed gratitude towards her late father, Abraham Sackey, for encouraging her to study Law because of his admiration for women lawyers. She also thanked the leadership of the ICGC Calvary Temple and the Christian community for their unwavering support. Although initially hesitant about leaving private practice to join the bench, she was persuaded by her father, Rev. Cudjoe, and her husband to accept the position. Reflecting on her first meager paycheck, she questioned her decision but prayed to God for the grace to be fair-minded and find just ways to administer justice according to the nation’s laws.
Justice Torkornoo voiced her hope that the Judicial Service would be equipped with the knowledge and determination to ensure justice for all individuals, irrespective of their socio-economic status, age, or health. She also prayed for blessings upon all judges, asking for purity of heart, integrity of mind, and a strong commitment to serve.
